If we had drilled for oil in the US, would it have prevented the war in Iraq?

No.

The war wasn't about oil.If we had drilled for oil in the US, would it have prevented the war in Iraq?
WOW... do you not know that we drill for oil in the US? Ever heard of the Alaskan Pipeline? I know it's a new concept but hey, believe it or not they pipe oil drilled in Alaska to other places for transport...If we had drilled for oil in the US, would it have prevented the war in Iraq?
Our oil reserves are not extensive enough to supply our needs for any great length of time, and once they're gone, they're gone. So the answer is no. Also, the theory about it being 'for oil' doesn't mean we actually physically take the oil. It means we control access to it, meaning we can't be cut off from it. And some people like the idea of the U.S. have that as a deterrent, and that is why they are mad. I am not one of those people, however.
Obviously the prior three (edit most everyone) answerer's are not very informed in world affairs and live in a daydream land. Watch ';hijacking Catastrophe'; to learn more about this, it is a very well done documentary.

To answer the question, the US hit peek oil on the early to mid 1970's and today world peek oil was previously predicted would happen when prices for per barrel hit 100 dollar, as you know has just recently happened.

Kristi you are nothing more than a ******* liar, if they had found any thing like that it would have been all over the news.
no...war was about terrorist...but It would have shut up the liberals...
NO, oil had nothing to do with the war in Iraq.
Nope. the war had nothing to do with oil. Sodam hussain was a madman, just as Hitler was, and nedded to be destroyed.
No ... middle east oil is still very important in stabilizing the price for this important commodity. Shut off the oil from the middle east, and the world would bid up the price of oil everywhere ... so even if we could produce 90% of our own oil. the world oil price would skyrocket without the large production from the persian gulf. This would put pressure on all of the world's economies. All economies of the world are interdependent ... so by the USA keeping the region stabalized, benefits the whole world,,, but just like the democrats in this country, many of the world's political leaders still bash the US ... the ingrates.
This so-called ';War'; in Iraq is nothing more than a nationally sponsored armed robbery of another countrys wealth (oil). It has been a national tradition of the USA ever since before we even became a nation to rob other peoples (Native Americans, Africans , Mexicans, Hawiians, Alaskans, ect..) of their land and natural resources just so the wealthy few here could live a life of luxury. Then they make up some lame excuse why it was justified and how the people who we slaughtered deserved it . The poor people here do all the fighting and dying and the rich just sit back and get rich off the plunder.

In that context, of course the conflict in Iraq would not be considered illegal. It would be like asking Hitler if killing Jews was illegal. We will all meet our maker someday and you can explain it to Him why all these civilians are dying unnecessarily. Be sure to mention that all the civilians that you just bombed were ';collateral damage'; and it was all legal because some oil company bought off our politicians to make it happen. I am sure He will understand and give you a big pat on the back and say ';Well done , soldier';.

By the way, the USA doesnt have any real soldiers. They are nothing but a bunch of over paid mercenaries doing the bidding of the wealthy few. Just wait a few years when the oil runs out and we all start killing each other just for scraps of wood to burn for warmth in the Winter. Then justice will be served on USA and the oil dependant nations who have foolishly wasted this precious natural resource and resorted to killing others and robbing them of their natural resources.

Hasta la Vista , Baby !!
Nice. Isn't it great to be able to ask people to do your debate for you instead of actually researching and developing it yourself?
nope..and we do drill for oil in the US...Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico have oil...but why use our resources if we do not have to..it a diminishing resource, save ours until we HAVE to use it
No! If the war is about oil, why are gas prices rising?

My husband deployed for the invasion (he was there when they took over the Baghdad airport) - he and his unit found nerve agent and empty warheads within a few kilometers of each other. Tell me how Iraq and Afghanistan aren't threats to our national security?
Oil? LOL NO the war is about the threat and the problems.. the War links back to 9/11.. why does everyone seem to forget that day?
Uhh...we do drill for oil in the U.S

There's oil rigs off the west coast, Texas, Oklahoma, Alaska, just to name a few....that should answer your question.

Edit: Since it's for a debate class...bring up the fact that we do drill for oil in the U.S, that should trump the other side or at least get you a point. Then mention some of the other opinions that you agree with that the other posters posted. If you look up the War in Iraq on Wiki it basically states that Bush had us invade because of WMD's. You can use that reason :)
No.

1) Pretty much all US oil reserves have been found already.

2) Prior to the Iraq war, the majority of Iraqi oil went to Europe.

3) Now, after the war, the majority of Iraqi oil STILL goes to Europe

4) Therefore, the comments about this being an oil-driven war are a lie, and worse - a provable (and therefore stupid) lie.

5) This was an Ideological war, driven by political theories, and in response to a whole series of political blunders by Iraq, the UN, and the US.

*Edit*

6) We don't control the flow of oil, either. The Iraqi Government controls where the oil goes, and how much they charge for it.

7) Even at maximum output, the most ambitious recovery from the Iraqi oilfields would not have paid for the *initial* estimate of the war costs, much less the real costs - Bush %26amp;Co. knew that going in.
What????

The war is not truly over oil, and we do drill for oil...what do you think the Alaskan pipeline does???? What about all of Texas???? What about our oil derricks in the Gulf? Are you even from the US?

We buy overseas oil because we want to use up all their oil while keeping ours for when everyone elses is gone...we are greedy, but the war is Bush's baby, not an oil thing.
