Obama's claim that proper car maintenance would save just as much oil as new offshore drilling would produce ?

sounded outrageous, but politifact researched it and it was true.

So is this more a statement about how little an impact new offshore drilling will make, or is it a statement about how the little things we can all do can make a big difference. Opinions please.Obama's claim that proper car maintenance would save just as much oil as new offshore drilling would produce ?
I know. After that McCain quietly admitted that Obama was right about the tire inflation and other maintenance.

I think part of the reason it works is because there are SO MANY vehicles on our roads each day. If you save a small percentage on each...it really adds up.

There's also the misunderstanding about how the world oil market works. Oil drilled here goes into the world market...its not necessarily destined for our use and it will likely be too little production to have a major impact on the world supply.Obama's claim that proper car maintenance would save just as much oil as new offshore drilling would produce ?
That's just poppycock. I don't care what your source says, if we have more oil on the market the price is going to go down. Simple economics of supply and demand. The true fact is, we could be producing oil much quicker than the ten years everyone is throwing out there and with each added barrel added to the world market the supply increases therefore the demand will lessen and the price will drop. I just don't understand the democrats reluctance to drill. Do they truly want to see poor people suffering at the pump every single day? I'm not saying we shouldn't inflate our tires, I'm all for anything and everything we can do to ease the price at the pump. I'm also for the development of alternative energy. Unfortunately, we aren't at a place right now were we have a truly viable alternative source. We need a stop-gap measure and that would be drilling for more oil. Let's open up ANWR and off-shore. Let's show the world what a true super power can do when it needs to.
Well yes actually as most people know it does save gas but there are a few facts that need to be added. One Americans are overall kind enough that they have conserved energy and we got that message in the 80's. For example there has been carpooling since around the early 80's. Also there are problems problems with some things that have been suggested to conserve gas. Following behind someone closely on the highway can be dangerous and can get you ticketed for tailgaiting. There are a few small things that can be done to maintain a car that can help gas mileage but not nearly enough to call it a solution. Also recently the reason the price of gas started going down is because we started drilling. It had a quick effect and more of an effect overall that how inflated a cars tires are.
I don't know why people are making it an either/or.

People should take proper care of their car.

People should conserve fuel.

There should be more oil exploration.

More nuclear power plants should be built.

More R%26amp;D should be poured into things like better battery technology.

Windmills, for electricity generation, should be build off the coast of Cape Cod (by the Kennedy compound).

It's not either/or. I don't know why the Obama campaign is making an issue of it.

Change is not a plan, it's just a slogan.
Its both, but one costs little, doesn't make a big splash, can't be argued about, and no one makes big money off it.

That's why we need drilling.

It may be oil under our land but the US is not in the business of drilling or refining oil. It sells leases to drill to oil companies, and they are owned by people all over the world, not just the US.

That oil doesn't have to be sold here at a cheap price.

So its not going to make us better off.

We already drill offshore, ask Louisiana, and Texas for two.
I think it's definitely more of a statement on what little impact off shore drilling would have. There is still something to be said about simple maintenance and it's effects on fuel consumption.

The best solution however, remains the development of fuel cell technology as well as electric vehicle development. Ultimately, alternatives are going to have to be found.
if even we weren't in this situation, proper car maintence should still be done. It helps the car last longer. I kept regular maintence on my old Jeep Grand Cherokee (1996) and I traded it in 2007 with 250,000 miles on it. It was getting to need more work than Iit was worth and we needed more space and better gas mileage.

Drilling offshore will help with some of the oil problems and most should stay in the US. Some will go into the world market, but the rest will probably go into the reserves for emergencies.
If we don't look to other means of sustainability then all we are doing is finding a superficial solution to the problem.
I have no idea which would be more cost-efficient. Bottom line for me is- If we drill in our own country, our billions of dollars will not be shipped overseas to those countries who want to destroy us.
